Review day
Today in Mr. Schick's Human Geography class we talked about what to expect for the mid-terms. There will be questions based on everything we have discussed since the beginning of the year, which i think is going to be very difficult because i have to remember everything since we started. However all i can do is review and review and check over my notes and try to get a good grade. We also talked about how even when we get back we don't change classes which confused me a little bit but if that how it works then that's how it works.

The Essay Review
Today in Human Geography with Mr. Schick we continued to work on our essays in his class. I spent the entire time finishing and revising my essay because its due tomorrow and i only had three paragraphs done. Which for having the essay prompt for close to a week and i still haven't got it completely done, i'm a really bad procrastinator. I didn't even start on it until Tuesday and i had it since Saturday. Regardless i have my concert tonight and i have to print the paper tonight so its gonna be a long night. I also get my new pump today for my diabetes. Its going to be tightly squeezed afternoon but i'm prepared. I'm glad Mr.Schick let us do it in class as well as at home so we could have a nice well written essay fro the mid-terms.

Getting the test back
Today in Human Geography with Mr. Schick we got our tests back and talked about the mid-terms. On the test I got a 89 which is pretty bad, like really bad. Its the lowest i have ever got on a Human geography test, especially the last one before Mid-Terms. But now i have something good to study from. We then talked about our essays's and i think i have a good start on mine. I have all of my information done and my first paragraph. Its hard this week to work on it though because i have to practice for my chorus concert which means i don't get out of school till late. However, i think i will do good on the essay because its something i actually care about. Its not an essay that i just don't care about. That's what i think about the essay and what we did in class today.

Test before Mid-Terms
Today in Human Geography with Mr. Schick we took our last test of the semester before mid-terms. This test was about emigration and Immigration, and everything we had talked about before including the podcast and the two different packets we got to red and take notes on. I feel as though i did very well on said test. Unfortunately from what i saw there was no extra credit so it looks like the highest i can get is a one hundred, which i'm happy about but i wanted over an one hundred. Anyway i feel really good about the test and i think i probably got a one hundred or maybe at the least a ninety eight. It wasn't nearly as hard as i thought it would be, i thought it was going to be very difficult but i didn't think it was that hard at all, actually to be honest i thought it was easy. That's the last test for this semester though, so now we must move on to reviewing which i think i will remember everything because i like this class.

Unauthorized Immigrants
Today in human geography we learned more about Unauthorized immigration. We talked about the border in between the united states and Mexico. The view of this from the U.S is that we recognize the motives of them being that they want a better life, employment, and to reconnect with their families. From Mexico, the northern Mexicans want America to show passion to unauthorized immigrants all while southern Mexico is in the same situation as America with all of the unauthorized immigrants coming from Guatemala into Mexico. Then we talked about the attitudes toward migration in the U.S. For example how many Americans want more effective border patrol, and how many jobs unauthorized immigrants can have because of the lack of people who want to do those jobs. And how U.S citizens favor letting law enforcement officials stop and verify the legal status of anyone, and how the problem of illegally coming into America, people suggest it show be the federal law take cover of that. Then how much like the U.S a lot of immigrants come into Europe, and how they are blamed fro crime, unemployment rates, an high welfare. However they are very against immigration but in the nineteenth century ninety percent of immigrants came from them. But Europe is nervous about losing their cultural heritage to that of new immigrants. To end class we talked about some characteristics for long distance immigration. It said most immigrants are male, most are adult individuals, most are young adults, most adults seek work rather than other things.

Power Point Version
Today in Human Geography with Mr.Schick we looked over the video that went with the reading of yesterday. On the power point i learned about how we classify countries to four types of immigration policies, One being maintaining current level, two increasing the level, three decreasing the level, and four being that there is no policy. In this we can see how 21 countries seek immigrants, 32 want fewer immigrants, 116 wish to maintain the level, and 25 have no policy. It works the same for emigration, there are 18 countries who want to increase their level, 46 who want to decrease, 43 who want to maintain their level, and 88 with no policy. Then i learned about people who are unauthorized persons(As the book calls it).This is where people come into the United States as an illegal with no paper work. Their were 11.3 million unauthorized persons in the U.S in 2014 and a peak of 12.2 million in 2007. I also got that over one half of unauthorized persons come from Mexico, the remainder are evenly dived between Latin American countries and other regions in the world. From that 11.3 million, 1 million of that are illegal children, and then from the illegal persons their is 4.5 million children born legal. This then relates to the work force because 8 million illegal persons are working in the U.S making 5% of the U.S labor force, making them more likely to do dirty jobs and blue collar work, not white collar work. Lastly i learned about how the U.S put Quotas on how many immigrants could come to America. a Quota put in 1921 called the Quota Act and the nationals Origin Act made in 1924 made it more difficult. in the Act of 1924 it made it to wear only 2% of each country to migrate to the U.S. then in 1965 it was split per hemisphere, 170,000 from eastern and 120,000 from western. Then in 1978 it was a Global Quota of 290,000 then in 1990 it changed to a Global Quota of 700,000.

Reading
Today in Human Geography with Mr.Schick we had to read about our lesson tomorrow. It was very boring and i didn't like it at all. Yet i did learn a couple things. Discussion volume four
Today in human geography with Mr. Schick we continued to discuss the same topic of the last couple days. It started with how the people would have to wait in Mexico as a waiting room to get into America. We also talked about how when people were rushing the border the trump administration would throw ear gas to stop them and deter them from entering America. Most people in my class thought this was a good idea. When this happened it showed everyone in that the united states doesn't want and or need you, and that it wasn't up to central America to decide if people were allowed in the United states it was decided by the American government. When Trump does all of this it shows again America first and that all other countries we don't care about and that we will always show that whatever is best for the United States is what will happen. It then leaves us at the very end of class to decide what Asylum should be determined.

Debate and video
Friday in Mr. Schick's human geography class we continued to finish the video and debate on certain things we found in the video. The video first started about Obama and how he put people who suffer from domestic violence can come into the united states. Then we were asked if we liked the rule or if we didn't and i personally don't like the rule. I thought it gave people to wide of a range and on top of that it also gave people more things to fake to be able to get into the country. Then it went to how our president Donald Trump made it harder to be able to get into the country and how he chips away at the asylum claims. The hole class seems to agree with what he is doing because their were so many people coming into the country and when he made it harder to come in in helps our great country.

Asylum
Today in human geography with Mr. Schick we talked about being in a debate in class and debating about an Asylum in the U.S. We talked about how we have to be respectful and not get rowdy if we do try to do a debate. So Mr. Schick decided to do it based on Asylum, which is not regarding the hospital, it is regarding the U.S.A taking in other people in emigration. We then started to do a video that was about how we turned the Jewish people away when they came here for a place to stay in the 19 hundreds. Because of this we then went to why and how we went about doing this and all the laws we put in place about it. We also talked about how the untied states then went to taking in tons of people to make America look as if it were a great place and to make hundreds of other countrie look bad in the world view point.

Interregional Migration
Today in human geography with Mr. Schick we learned about interregional migration. We learned that people do this due to perceived economic betterment and it typically compels individuals to make interregional migrations. From this we talked about an example of this, in the Westward expansion. In this historical event enticement of abundant available land on the American Frontier lead to people moving. They wanted to find land they could claim in order to farm and make money. However, since presently most jobs, especially services, are in urban areas that's were most people had to move to find jobs in present times. Even in westward expansion it contributed to a shift in the center of population. It was before the westward expansion close to the cost but when everyone started to move it moved the center of population closer to the mid America area. That's what we had learned in Human geography today taught by Mr. Schick.

Migration
Today in Human Geography with Mr. Schick we learned about migration. We learned that mobility is all types of movement, like going from school to the store and then home is mobility. We also learned that migration is defined as a permanent move to somewhere else, but their are many different types of migration. Most people relocate a short distance and remain in the same country, but some long distance migrants move to other countries in major centers of economic activity. Migration can also be divided into two categories. One being internal migration a permanent move from one country to another either voluntary or forced, and Internal migration a permanent move within the same country either interregional or intraregional. Then there are international migration patterns, where approximately 9 percent of the worlds people are international migrants, Global patterns reflect migration tendencies from developing countries to developed countries= Net out migration and net in migration. Then in the U.S there are 3 main eras of migration, colonial settlements in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, mass European immigration in the late 19th and 20th centuries, and Asian and Latin American integration in the late 20th and early twenty first centuries.

The review and little quiz
Today
in human geography with Mr. Schick we began class by reviewing over what we did
last class with the video. I had previously looked on varacross so I knew we
had a quiz I just had no idea what the quiz was on. but after we went over the
video notes and turned them in, he said we had a quiz on the notes. Which in
taking the quiz he was exactly right, the quiz just asked us the same questions
that the paper did on Hans Rosling. However, he continued to talk about the
demographic transitions like we had discussed it before which caused confusion.
As far as I know, and I have never missed this class, we have never gone over
this before, but he acts as though we did. I don't know if it is a mess up on
my part or his part, but I do know that I have no idea what he is trying to get
at when he talks about the stages and things. Like he will ask what is stage
one? Well I have no idea and he seems to get frustrated when he respond in such
ways but we never learned it, I even looked back in my blog after the quiz and
my journal before the quiz and I couldn't find anything on these per say
stages. That’s all we did in class, I am writing this in class now and that’s all
we are doing in class.

The Video
Today in Mr. Schick's human geography class we watched a video. He scared the class at first because he came up and said we had a pop quiz on something we had no idea about, and when i got the paper it was on a video we had never watched. Then he told us it was just a joke, which i was very happy about. However we did spend thirty five minutes just watching one video which was only four minutes an like thirty five seconds at best, and we had to fill out questions based on the video. I was able to answer like five out of the ten questions that were their because some of the questions i didn't think the video covered, questions asking about what stage certain countries were in that i couldn't answer because i was confused on what he meant by stages related to the video. I also had a shadow in today, and he was able to understand and talk about the questions when we asked them in class so that was kind of cool.

Closer Look At The Test #3
Today in human geography with Mr. Schick we got our test back and went over them to review and so we know everything for the mid-terms i suppose. On the test i got a 102 and the only thing i got wrong was the one bonus question, the question what whats the Net Migration rate fro the world? I put like thirty six and some change but the actual answer was like zero because no one is leaving the world. I thought that question was pretty good and i wished at the time i would have realized what the question was actually asking. Anyway there were only three of the class that got over a hundred percent or higher so i felt pretty good about it. Our class average was only like eighty six though which i think should be higher but everyone else thought it was a really good average. However out of all of his classes we had the lowest average score, which i don't really understand because all we have to do is take notes and pay attention and the test is basically exactly what we talked about.

Test on Population
Today in human geography we took a test on population and the CIA world fact book. On the test today i studied a lot and felt really good going into it, i feel as though i did really well too. On the first part, the CIA fact book part, i answered all the questions with time still on the clock, instead of fifteen minutes it took me like ten. After that i continued on the rest of the test and for me i thought it really wasn't that hard. A couple of the questions required me to think about it but i had remembered going over them in class, a couple of them were super easy though, Mr. Schick even gave us a word bank. After that we had a couple questions on population pyramids which was easy for me. The test consisted of questions like which one is a developing nation, which is the Christmas tree, which one is probably a population pyramid for Japan, easy questions like that. Anyway i think i did well and i'm excited for our next unit whatever it may be on.

Reviewing For Test
Today in human geography with Mr. Schick we reviewed for the test that we have on Thursday. We spent most of the time looking at the CIA world fact book because we will have only fifteen minutes to complete fifteen questions. Due to this i am nervous to complete the test because in class there were plenty of things i didn't know how to look up in a quick manner. Like the GDP i had no idea how to look that up but then i looked it up and figured out how to and it was really easy. I also was able to see that if i look at the cite more often i can do that test really fast. After that Mr. Schick went over the things not online that we needed to do know and i realized that i actually have some reviewing to do for the test. We don't have Mr. Schick for Human geography tomorrow so i will spend the time i would be spending doing a blog to review so that i can hopefully pass the test with a one hundred percent.

Population Pyramid's for following places
Today in human geography with Mr. Schick we discussed more about population pyramids. We continued to go over how a population pyramid can either be a Christmas tree, a box, or a cup, however they can also be undefined which is were it follows no pattern like the following patterns. Also in class today we looked at the worlds population pyramid and what it will look like when we are around sixty and it was pretty cool. I got to see how when i'm old the population will grow at an astonishing rate from what it is now, and that Nigeria will actually have one of the largest populations due to how fast they are reproducing. But the united states will continue to grow as a box so that we are a developed nation with a slow birth rate.Anyway we also have the test this Thursday and i feel pretty comfortable with what i have to know, as of just knowing how to navigate the world fact book.

Population Pyramids
Today in human Geography class we first started off class by me introducing my shadow, I was a shadow host host for the seniors dean Mr. Powell's son. Anyway today we were talking about population pyramids, which in my opinion are fairly easy to read and analyze. Mr. Schick made it known that it was very important to understand that males are always on the left and females are always on the right. Which for me is easy to remember, and that based on these population pyramids you can discover a lot about a nation or country. The first thing was the three basic shapes, a Christmas tree, the box, and the cup. based on these their was a series of things that one person can identify about a country. For example, a Christmas tree is typically a developing nation, has slow growth rates, high birth rates, and short life expectancy. The box is typically a developed nation with slow growth, theirs a low infant mortality rate, slow population growth, and long life expectancy. Lastly, the cup is typically a developed nation with negative growth, has a slow birth rate, shrinking population, and long life expectancy.

Fact books and class
Today in class we first went over what we had learned yesterday in class and for homework regarding the CIA Fact book. I learned that the USA has thirteen thousand air ports and the next in line is China with around four thousand. I even learned that their is a air port in Forest Hill. In doing this i was able to learn more about other countries, and other interesting facts about other nations. I was also able to see how helpful the CIA Fact book can be when doing research about other countries. Another fact that I didn't know was that the're more twenty-five to fifty-four year old's in America then the're are anything else, so this means that someone selling something will have to try to get people from this age group to try to sell important things and make a lot of money. Also that the United States has the most obese population in countries. Also, that the highest deaths of Aids as of in 2016 is in Nigeria, and the list continues to go on and on with more African countries due to their poor healthcare and not being able to find and or see a doctor their. We then found out that our test will be based on the CIA World Fact book, and that our test is fifteen questions and we have only fifteen minutes to look up and find the information. This means that we have to be very familiar with the cite and how to look things up quickly. We will also have a part of the test that will be definitions and how to find the immigration and emigration rate and other rates. We will also have to know how to read these weird looking things that apparently are referred to as a Christmas tree or something like that. Then we listened the the National Anthem and it was great.

CIA Fact book
Statistic; 11 births out of every 1,000 people and 13.5 deaths out of every 1000 people.
~In Russia their is only 11 births per 1,000 people and 13.5 deaths per 1,000 people. This means that their population would be dropping. I found this interesting that what i thought to be a well a big country is actually decreasing in size.
Statistic; 36.2% out of 1,000 people are obese
~ I knew that a lot of people in the united states were overweight but i didn't think that just a little under 50% were overweight. I thought that more along the lines of 20%.
Statistic; 70% Chinese out of 2,205 population
~ I found this interesting that a island in the Indian Ocean would have the majority of Chinese people would live there.
Statistic; 19.1% of population can read.
~ I figured in Niger that many could not read, however i thought it would be like 50% can read not 19% especially due to how big the country is.
Statistic; A little more than 22 million
~ I thought this was weird for Sri Lanka because its such a small island with such a large population.

Population including migration
Today in human geography we learned about measuring population. we learned that RNI stands for rate of natural increase and you come up with the RNI by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate. We also learned about the net migration rate which is the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year. We followed this up with net immigration, which is the excess of persons entering the country. Then emigration which is the excess of persons leaving the country. So why would people migrate? Well due to the push and pull factors, push factors include civil war, environmental degradation, unemployment or underemployment, and religious freedom. some pull factors are better economic opportunities, better health services, religious freedom, and political freedom. On the other side of all of this there is the TFR or total fertility rate is the average of number of children born per women. For a population to remain the same it must stay 2.1, anything lower population will fall, anything higher population will rise.

Life Expectancy
Today in human geography with Mr. Schick we continued a unit and looked over our tests. In the tests we came up and either received one ring, two rings, or no rings. Most people in the class received no ring which means they got a 89 or below, and we were made clear that our test scores averaged the lowest throughout all of his classes. this therefore frustrated him like it would any, and only we can fix that. When we got back into our regular unit we started to talk about life expectancy, and that the united states ranks number 42 in the standings. We began to talk about why and came up with some solid reasons. Things like the American life style, which means how we eat fast and unhealthy food, and how we are constantly sitting in cars and not walking or biking. Another reason is drugs. The US has the highest percent of users of heroin. A lot of people in the US use heavy drugs such as this and other countries keep supplying because there making a ton of money. We lastly talked about how women seem to always live longer than men. The major reason as we discussed in class was that men typically put more stress on their body then women do. With jobs being the major factor in which stress infects the body.

New Unit on Population+Settlement
Today in Human Geography we started our new section on Population and settlement. I thought maybe first we would get our tests back but there were still people who hadn't done it yet so they had to do it while we were in class. I still already know my score i got a ninety three percent bu ti want to know what i got wrong because i felt really good about the test. Anyway we also talked in class about how many people live on Earth, and about how fast that number has approached today's seven billion. However, we talked about how it was very common for people back in the day to have a lot of kids, and mostly the women took care of the kids. But as time progressed people stopped doing that and would only have one or two kids, which made the population decrease from how fast it was growing. We really ended class that way, With talking about how when my teacher was kid family's had lots of kids and then his generation family's only had a couple, and then future generations of family's had less and less.

TEST #2
So today we took our test on maps and geography in human geography. I think i did really well on the test, i actually think i got a 100 but i'm not sure. It seemed pretty easy while i was taking it, but i don't know if it was easy because i wasn't sure, if that makes any sense. Everyone in class was really quite while we were taking the test, probably because Mr. Schick warned us about detentions. I plan on keeping a good look at my varacross so when he uploads them i can see my grade and know what i have to review on to keep good grades and for midterms. I studied a good bit for this test, I was a little stressed before hand because most of my teachers gave a test today, but that's just part of school and part of life in general. So anyways i think i aced my test, i hope i aced my test.

Review Day #2
Today in class we continued to review for the test for the second day. Mr. D was back in class today, so we went on to help the class review. We began by going over all of the normal review questions, but Mr. D came up with a smart idea to help us really get the information in our head... We Would Play A Review Game. It makes reviewing fun and feel like its more worth while. My side of the room lost but we did get good information based on what we had learned. I had to leave for most of the class due to my blood sugar issues regarding my diabetes. When i came back i took the stand and tried to get our team a point but i had the answer right but couldn't write it down fast enough. It was all in all a fun class and i feel really good and confident about the test tomorrow.

Review Day(Picking questions for the test)
Today in class the teacher Mr. Schick decided to make it a review day for the test Friday. In doing this he told us that everything we go over in the review he will put on the test, which then he told us that based on our feed back we will choose the kind of questions that will be on the test. The only real notes that i took today was things i needed to personally look over to make sure i would have everything down. I wrote things such as the Prime Meridian, degrees of longitude in each time zone (there are 15), opposite side of the Earth's Prime Meridian is the International dateline, and to look over and review my distortion notes. So far i think i have it all down and i think i will do well on the test, i'm hoping to do like i did on the first test and have a perfect score. In order to do this i am studying hard and looking over my notes a lot. To sum up class Mr. Schick told us the test would be open maps, so i think based on this i should do well, i'm hoping will do well.

Regions
Friday in class we learned about regions and culture. We started class by learning that culture is the body of customary beliefs, material traits, and social forms that together constitute the distinct tradition of a group of people. The origin of the word culture is the latin cultus which means "to care for" and there is 2 meanings to care about and to care for. We then learned about geographers, and what kind of things they studied. They study things such as why the customary ideas, beliefs, and values of a people produce a distinctive culture in a particular place. Especially important cultural ideas form from a groups language, religion, and ethnicity. After this we went on to how different places are similar. Scale, space and connections help geographers to explain why there are so many similarities on earth. Scale is the relationship between the portion of the Earth being studied and earth as a whole.

Review Day
Today in class we reviewed what we have gone over so far this unit. In class we never even turned on the lights or the projector. However, we still went over everything we have done so far. I for the most part i knew and had it in my notes everything we talked about. I knew most of the answers Mr. Schick asked but i didn't answer anything i just kept it to myself. After a few questions i asked Mr. Schick if my buddy Ben looked like Socrates which i think they look alike, and he agreed. I think i found out Ben's new nickname, he wont like it but he will come to accept it i think(laughing). Anyway i think today's class was useful because were able to go back to some questions we were asked in the beginning. We are now able to give good solid answers to some of these questions were as before we had no idea.

POP quiz and more about regions
Friday in class we learned more about regions BUT we had a Pop Quiz. The quiz was actually really difficult. There was ten questions on the test, and he gave us fifteen seconds to come up with an answer. In doing this it was super difficult, because you had no time to think about the question, but it was also really good because we had to recall everything we learned very quickly, and do it before fifteen seconds. In a way it makes us remember it faster and better because we have to come up with it on spot, but in another way its bad because you have to come up with it on spot and you don't get to think about it. However I pulled a eighty percent on the quiz so i wasn't Happy about my grade but I was okay with it. After the quiz we went on to going over a functional and a vernacular region. We Learned that Functional region is a region is a region organized around a focal point. And a Vernacular region is a region is a area that people believe exists as part of their culture or identity, such as the South with farming.

region and student teachers
Today In class we went over the different types of regions and we also had students come up and teach the class. We started with the definitions of different words like Toponym which is the name given to a place, Site which is the physical character of a place, and situation which is the location of a place relative to other places. We then went over what a Region is which is a unique area of land, it is unique because there is only one in the world and every place is different. When the two students went up to teach it was fun and I thought is was cool to be able to learn from a students stand point and what they knew compared from learning it from a teacher. We all had some good laughs in class and all together we learned more about maps.

Return of the Test
Today in school was a freshman dress as baby's day so that was fun. While we were in class we went back over our old tests. In this test there were only two people in his hole human geography classes and i was one. I had a overall test grade of one hundred and two. I felt really good about this test and the fact that i was one of two people who got a perfect score helped my confidence about tests. After the test we talked about different people such as Collin kaepernick, who knelled for the National Anthem. I personally don't think it was right at in in any reason, but that's just my views. We were asked to define words for this blog so i figured after i discussed class i would begin. The first word is Place, meaning A particular position in space. The next word we were asked to define was location meaning a particular place or position. We then have the word site; an area of ground in which a building or town is constructed. Then situation or the location and surroundings of a place. Then toponym which means what a place is named. And lastly region which is an area or division, especially part of a country.

GPS pros and cons + Technology
Today in Human Geography class with Mr.Schick we talked about the Global Positioning System, short for GPS. A GPS gives us precise location were ever we are in the world. It is so precise because it uses satellites (four of them) to determine distance from them, to determine your exact location. This is so good that it can give you turn-by-turn directions, and helps pilots and sea captains to know what to expect, it also gives location for social media applications in smart phones. However because it gives apps and social media your location it always knows were you are, and someone out there always knows were you are. And then for an example an "Alexa" is always listening to your conversations whenever its on. It listens and tracks everything said but only responds when someone says, "Hey, Alexa....". Because it does this it can get personal information from you based on your location and what it hears. After that discussion in class we began talking about how certain points on Earth are unique. We said that each point on the map is distinguished by specific characteristics, and because its so specific it can help geographers to identify similarities and differences among Earth.

Catch up Day
Today in school we were able to dress down and it was really cool. I had to pay three dollars in order to dress down which i didn't really understand. Anyway it was still cool, I was able to see what people i go to school with would wear if they were outside of school. However, i also know some people wouldn't dress like that outside of school, like me. Normally i wear jeans, cowboy boots, and a tee shirt. But it was still cool to not have to be in uniform. In class Mr. Schick read each of our blogs and had us come up in order to talk about them. I was to a degree nervous at what he would say about mine, but what was said was all positive. So that was good. In class we were able to do our blogs which was helpful, but I really didn't know what to talk about. So i waited to do it today so i knew what to talk about. We were told to talk about maps and what we knew but for the most part with maps i just know the basics. Follow the key to figure out what your doing. So that was what class pretty much was Friday and it wasn't just a good class but a good day.

Lateness and Maps
Today in class we learned a couple of things. In class for the first around fifteen to twenty minutes our teacher didn't show up to class, when this happened we just played on our computers. I had a heck of a game of Pacman going for the first couple of minutes. When He did arrive we gave us all three kinds of Maps, a Peters Projection Map, a Robinson Projection Map, and a Mercator Projection Map. On these maps we had to locate many of different things. the things we had to locate were The Equator, Prime Meridian, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, all seven continents, all five oceans, International Date Line, our country of Origin, and the John Carroll School. These papers as we were told are not going to be collected, but he said to do it anyway because of the studying reasons.

Maps and Time
Today in class we furthered our discussion on Maps and started to question time. In class we started our talk about how maps have became different and have become used for different things. We talked about how maps took a shift to provide location reference to a tool used bu geographers to communicate complex geographic phenomenons. For example on the latitude lines, a state who is on the same line as another state on the latitude lines will have similar weather, therefore a geographic phenomenon. Later in class we talked about the Meridians which are arcs drawn between North and South poles. Then Parallels which are arcs drawn parallel to the equator, and these can be used to lead you to any point on Earth. We than talked about time, we learned that time zones vary between longitude and latitude. However we asked the question why was the clock made in 12 parts. When we count no one counts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,...1. So why was the clock made like that?

Cartographers and the video
The points made by the cartographers are very valid points in the video and when examined i agree with fully. When they make points such as how invalid the size represented in the maps are one must take note of the importance of size. Like they say in the video most people associate size with power, and in the normal map it makes third world countries smaller. Such as how Greenland is represented as roughly the same size as Africa, when in fact Africa is fourteen times the size of Greenland. This then makes Africa none proportionate. Again as said in the video this map was good for one who was sailing but not for teaching. It does the same thing with South America and Europe, it makes Europe look larger when in fact South America is much larger. Just this point alone I would argue would be enough to realize how someone should switch maps. I believe it is very important to have real size in a schools classroom. Therefore so people learn the real size of things and realize how big certain countries are compared to others. Another point made by the video is how people see things such as top and bottom. If you put the Southern hemisphere on the top of the map by simply flipping the map, and when you do this the hemispheres don't matter. Personally this isn't a bad idea because who knows what way someone might enter the Earth. They might enter and see the Southern Hemisphere on top or the Northern, who knows. All in All, I believe points made in the video were valid and true all the way on why the Peters Projection Map is the best map to use.

Map information
Today in Human Geography we learned more about maps. With maps we first learned about how the maps scale can tell us a lot. The map scale can be show in three different ways but the most common of them is the fraction and ratio (Example 1:24000 or 1/24000). With these the number on the left represents one unit of distance, while the number on the left represents the same unit of distance but on Earths surface. The scale can also be written as a written scale (Example 1 inch=1 mile). The number on the left is one unit of distance while the number on the right represents a different unit of measurement but on Earths surface. Lastly it can be written as a Graphic scale which usually consists of a bar line marked to show the distance on Earths surface. We then learned how every map that we have come in counter with have been distorted and wrong. We learned that the maps are distorted by the shape of an area, distance between points can be increased/decreased, size of areas can be increased/decreased, and direction between points can be distorted. Because of all of these imperfections we were able to see the map of the world that closets represents the world, Peters World Map. This map shows everything as in real size and representation to everything else. For example this shows how big Africa is compered to South America, this also shows how the map we have learned in schools is wrong for example it shows Greenland about the same size of Africa were as Africa is actually fourteen times the size of Greenland.

First Day About Maps
In class today we began by being told the questions we must answer further in the future. The questions were "How do geographers describe where things are? Why is each point on Earth unique? Why are different places similar? and Why are some human actions not sustainable"? I must say that by this point I had no idea how to answer any of these questions, there questions that I must acquire more knowledge first to answer. We then learned more questions we will be able to answer after this unit, such as "Explain differences between early maps and contemporary maps. Describe the role of map scale and projections and making maps. And finally, Explain how latitude and longitude are used to locate points on Earths surface." After this we then finally got into the lesson and started off by learning what Human geography actually is. Human Geo is actually the study of where things are found on Earths surface and the reasons for the locations. We then discussed that a Cartographer is the science of map making. After this we were able to see the first map of the world. We were able to see that the first maps were for being able to get from point A to point B and the first world map was made by Eratosthenes(279-194 B.C), Then it was improved by Ptolemy. Map making then revived during the age of exploration and discovery, and the first maps were made based on the Mediterranean being the middle. They named it the Mediterranean because the name means "Middle of the Earth".

After the test
In
class today, we took our first test on the series of things we have learned. Honestly,
I was very worried and nervous coming up to the test today, I was told it was
very hard and I was worried I would fail. However, when it became time for the
test I felt as though I remembered everything, and it wasn't to me very hard.
The questions I felt I did good on and the essay I felt like I did very good
on. The hole test took me a little longer than everyone else but, in the end,
I feel like I used my time wisely and came up with the appropriate answer from
my notes. The only thing is I would have studied the backstory to democracy a
little better. When asked, "What is the importance to 508 BC". I feel
like my answer was very dull and lacking information and I wish I would have
remembered it better. I also wish I would have studied the meaning behind the
word Polis. When asked the two root words I responded with
"Political" and "Poll”, but I don't believe those were the right
answer. All in all, I do feel like I did good on the test, but I also know I didn't get it all
right and I wish I would have studied some of the pieces of information a
little better.

First test
In
Human Geography today we started class off by reviewing over Socrates's charges
in Athens. By this I mean reviewing over his charges of corruption of youth and
impiety which means not believing in the gods. In class Mr. Schick also
discussed the important question we must answer on the test. The question
we must answer is "The examined life is not worth living". What this question is asking is if you don't think about your purpose in life and don't bother trying to improve anything that you have the power to control is life really worth living. In this we must discuss the connection between everything in the unit we learned such as the message to Garcia, The beginning of democracy, and Socrates. We have this test Monday and in all honesty I don't know how to answer it, in my opinion the examined life isn't worth living. But compared to everything we have learned in class I don't know how to answer it, I could say that of course I agree because Socrates stuck in by saying that in his trial when he pretty much said, yes I did the crime and i'm not sorry because its my job. So how to make this relate to the examined life i'm not sure of and how to make it relate to the message to Garcia i'm not sure how to accomplish. I think I might try to make it relate by saying how Rowan lived his life trying to accomplish things by listening to the president and delivered the message to Garcia, and Socrates by encouraging young people to think independently and and not just follow what everyone says you should follow.

Today in Human Geography we learned about Athens, Socrates, and what "Idiot" meant in Athens. In class we started off learning about Athens, in this we discussed how Athens was known to be a great city that would attract great thinkers. This caused many people to go there in order to continue studies or start studies of astronomy, medicine, meteorology, literacy, philosophy, and things scientific. These studies however were very often at odds with traditional teachings such as Greek gods. Then we went back to the discussion of Socrates, Socrates was charged on accounts of two things, Impiety( Not believing in Gods) and the corruption of Athens children. This was mainly due to him teaching kids to think independently and ask questions on what everything was instead of just following it because that's what they were taught. When he was charged with these things his only defense was, "Its my job to be the gadfly to the lazy, sluggish horse that is Athens" he also said, "I should actually be rewarded with free dinners". By this he never said sorry or apologized he simply said its my job to do this and you should actually reward me. The aftermath of all this was that the jury of 500 male citizens found him guilty(279-219). This means that with him saying he did the crime and saying he did it very well that 219 people voted for him innocent. He was then sentenced to death by drinking poison Hemlock. Before he died he had the opportunity to escape but chose to stay proving his loyalty to Athens democracy. After we went over this in class we then proceeded to talk about an "Idiot" which in Athens meant someone who didn't take part in pubic affairs and someone who didn't vote on things in the Agora. That's what we learned today in Human Geography.

In class today we learned more about excellence. We started off with learning about Democracy and how excellence is such a big part in democracy. Because if you have excellent people participating and taking part in Democracy then there will be smart decisions and there will be a good Democracy. After this we talked about some key terms like Agora. Agora means a gathering place, assembly; Center of athletics, spiritual and political life. We also talked about the word Polis, which means Political entities ruled by their bodies of citizens; origin of the words politics, metropolitan, and poll. When we talked about this Mr. Schick spoke about how people would come up to a stand and state their opinion in a Agora, everyone had a turn and then they voted on what they thought was better. After this we talked about the birth of democracy in 508 BC. When this happened it was the first time in history that a group of people had revolted against their rulers, then they choose to be a democracy and Rome based their government on that aspect. However, after they revolted in 508 BC their were a lot of revolts, such as United states in 1776, France in 1789, china in 1851&1949, Russia in 1917, Iran in 1979, and Egypt in 2011. After we talked about the revolts we talked about Socrates. Socrates started a work as a stonemason and then went on to fight in the Polopennesian war and was known as a hero in it. After the war he came back to meet with young people in workshops outside the Agora and he would ask young people a series of questions to determine their underlying beliefs

Today in class we learned more about "The message to Garcia" and how popular it actually become when it was written. we learned to day in class that it was originally made to inspire young people, and it was so good it was made into a pamphlet and a book. This was then sold over forty million copies and made into 37 languages. This was then made into a movie, twice once in 1916 and then in 1936. This was also written during the Spanish American war. The characters were simple in the writing as well, rowan was an army officer, McKinley was the American president. In class today we also talked about vocab that we should know. We talked about Perihelion which is The point when a planet is closest to the sun, and its at its brightest. We also talked about Imbecility which means stupidity, and we also talked about Missive which is a letter. The last vocab we talked about was the word Aret`e which means Excellence of any kind and means that you should fulfill your life to your highest potential.

My first interpretation of the "Message to Garcia" is one of many different aspects. I believe this essay is one of truth, one of too high expectations, and one that lacks reality. I believe this essay is one of truth for many reasons. Those reasons are simple, anyone who does anything that is asked without questions is a highly in need worker. This is a man/women who knows what they're doing and trusts in the boss to do anything without question. This worker will never have trouble finding a job or an employer because any boss would be pleased to have a worker who asks no questions when told a job because he knows they will do it to their very best and not question the action. However, this essay is also one of too high expectations. I say this because most workers must gain the trust of the boss and will question the action when asked to do something because they want to know how and why to do it, so there not doing something for no reason. Based on this I can explain why this essay is one that lacks reality. As people we are brought up to question the world around us and to question what it is we do daily. That is why this essay lacks reality, because as any employer can say a worker will always question to figure out why he/she is doing an action, or how to do the action accordingly in order to please the boss. With all of this said as a high school student this essay speaks one major thing to me. This essay says that you should not question as much when someone asks you to do something. It shows that you should give trust to your boss/teacher that they will ask you to do things and they are all for a reason.

So far in attending the John Carroll school I have only had true classes for a single day. However that day was today's classes and it was a good experience for a first day of high school and the first day at John Carroll. With counting orientation (if you want to count that) I have gotten to meet a substantial amount of people, people that I am happy to be in the class of 2022 with. I was able to meet a lot of upper class-men as well. Most upper class-men i met at orientation and then from that I was able to see some of them during school and they introduced me to some of their friends which I now see in the halls as well. They are always fun to talk, and if I ever have any questions I can always ask them and they don't mind answering me, or so I think they don't mind. The classes I have seem to be going good to, yet again it is only the first day but so far it seems like I have some good teachers. All in all my first experience of classes at John Carroll have been good and I am looking forward to the rest of the school year as a incoming freshman.
