First Day About Maps

In class today we began by being told the questions we must answer further in the future. The questions were "How do geographers describe where things are? Why is each point on Earth unique? Why are different places similar? and Why are some human actions not sustainable"? I must say that by this point I had no idea how to answer any of these questions, there questions that I must acquire more knowledge first to answer. We then learned more questions we will be able to answer after this unit, such as "Explain differences between early maps and contemporary maps. Describe the role of map scale and projections and making maps. And finally, Explain how latitude and longitude are used to locate points on Earths surface." After this we then finally got into the lesson and started off by learning what Human geography actually is. Human Geo is actually the study of where things are found on Earths surface and the reasons for the locations. We then discussed that a Cartographer is the science of map making. After this we were able to see the first map of the world. We were able to see that the first maps were for being able to get from point A to point B and the first world map was made by Eratosthenes(279-194 B.C), Then it was improved by Ptolemy. Map making then revived during the age of exploration and discovery, and the first maps were made based on the Mediterranean being the middle. They named it the Mediterranean because the name means "Middle of the Earth".
